Friday Night Sew In Projects

The Friday night sew in for May was a success for me. The past few sew ins I didn't get much accomplished if anything.

I completed a table runner that I had started last weekend. I used the tumbler die from my Accuquilt Go Fabric Cutter and 4 different black/white fabrics. For the backing and binding I used a red/black print.


I also cut some hexagons that I'm going to put together to make two table toppers. I think that sewing these together is going to be a challenging session.


Lastly I finished my apron and some oven mitts for the Pin Up Hot Mama Apron Swap. This is just a sneak peek. I'll post more on the project at another time.

April Friday Night Sew In

Friday Night Sew Is a No Go

Last Friday night's sew in was a bust for me. I had been away all week for work. By the time I got home Friday evening I was so tired that all I could do was pull out the material for a project. I had embroidered this Easter egg basket last year and didn't do anything with it so I decided to make a quick hexagon table topper which I am working now.


Maybe I'll be able to participate in April's Sew In. And maybe not, it maybe the weekend of the NJ Shop Hop. We shall see.

Friday Night Sew In and a Completed Quilt Top

Last night's Sew In was successful as far as I'm concerned. I managed to finish this paper pieced stain glass quilt top after working on it for almost two years.


This paper pieced quilt was a block of the month project at Piecing with Grace, my local quilt store. The first time I visited this store, I was admiring the quilt hanging in the shop. A woman came up to me and asked if I liked it. I said I loved it and that I wished I had the skill to do that. She said to me I could have you paper piecing in 30 minutes. Of course I didn't believe that but she said when you are ready to learn come back to the shop and I'll teach you.

Well after a lot of thought a few weeks later I paid another visit to the shop and this wonderful lady taught me how to paper piece. It took a little longer than 30 minutes but by the time I finished my first block I was hooked and signed up for the block of the month which ran from July 2008 to June 2009. I originally had the dates posted March 2008 to March 2009, oops.

After I completed the 12th block I was able to purchase the finishing kit which consisted of the center piece and the borders. When I saw the million pieces in that centerpiece I said to myself you are never going to finish this project. But I did. I took my time and worked on it when I could. I had the center pieced together in about a month. Then I put the entire project away until last weekend when I picked brought it out to start assembling the top.

The picture below shows various stages of the making of this "paper pieced stain glass" quilt top.


I must say that I am extremely happy with this quilt top. Now I have to find a nice backing for it and then I can have it quilted. I am extremely grateful to the wonderful person who taught me this technique. BTW she's the one who made the quilt that was hanging in the shop and she's the mother of the 3 sisters who own the shop.

Looking forward to the March sew in. Maybe I can finish up another project.

Block of the Month Projects

I thought last night was the sew in. Duh, I need to check dates, LOL. Anyway I ended up having company that stayed over, my dd and her 3 kiddies. So instead of sewing I'd concentrate on organizing projects. I have 3 block of the month (BOM) projects from last year that need to be put together. I have decided not to start any other projects (the exception being aprons for the swaps I've committed to) until these are done. So last night I gathered all the blocks and all the finishing materials together to see exactly what I needed to do to finish up these projects.

This project was a paper piecing project from Piecing with Grace, a LQS. This was my first BOM since I've started quilting. I learned paper piecing at the shop. These are the fabrics from the finishing kit to complete the project.


Next up is the BOM from Pastimes Quilt Shop. I completed the blocks a few weeks ago at the Jersey Girl Quilters get together.


The shop has a finishing kit but I decided not to go with it. I have these matching fabrics and still need to decide how I'm going to complete the top. This will be a quilt that will be donated somewhere down the line.


The last project was another one at Piecing With Grace. This project consists of embroidered blocks and is named the Crazy Compass Quilt by the Hoop Sisters. This was a quilt as you go project so all that is left to do is add the sashing and the binding.

I'm going to use the leftover material to complete the sashing and binding of these blocks. I'm anxious to get this one completed because it matches my newly created sewing room.


Lastly I decided what fabric I'm going to use to do my apron for the Martini Madness Apron Swap. Aprons have to be mailed by February 8 so I need to get busy on it.


So I didn't get any actual sewing done but at least I organized my projects and now know what I need to do. I have my work cut out for me, don't I? Now what I need to do is find the time.
